Sai's Fijian Scene

Only two cakes this week, but that's good as it gives me a chance to get ahead of myself with decorations for next weekend, which is a doozie. I was quite nervous about making this cake as I make no aspersions to being an artist but the customer wanted a Fijian scene painted onto the cake. In the end I was pleased with the result of this sunset picture. The cake is enormous - four 9" fruit cakes put together

Ken's 70th

The second cake for this weekend and I was very pleased with the lovely clean lines of this one. I found this design on the internet and thought it would be quite suitable for a 70-year-old. The stars in the middle just finish it off perfectly.

Alan's Beach Scene

This cake was cool to make. The customer wanted a cake which showed her four children at the beach, with birthday boy Alan in the centre. I feel I have accomplished everything she wanted. Under the fondant is a lovely big, moist chocolate cake. I used lemon sherbet sprinkled over the fondant to look like sand and it worked out really well. A lot of fun.

Yvonne's Princess Castle

I am happier this time around making this cake. I think I am getting the wee princesses better than the first attempt. There is a lot of cake in this one as not only are there two tiers of square cake, the round turrets are also cake. In this case the cakes are a mixture of chocolate and rainbow/vanilla.

Pearl's Cupcakes

Aren't these gorgeous? The customer wanted matching cupcakes to go with Pearl's cake and I spent a few hours making up miniature characters. I was so happy with how they turned out and they looked so cute. I am thinking I might put them on Trade Me and see of there is a market for them.

Pearl's Winnie the Pooh

This cake is a bit of a hybrid from a couple of other cakes I have made. I do like how it turned out, especially the rainbow balls around the cakes. The customer didn't want a cake covered in fondant so the cakes are just butter cream with fondant decorations.

Alex & Matt's Smurf

Only the one cake for this week. I hear tell that the Smurfs are making a comeback. If the request put in for this cake is anything to go by, that's right. I liked the touch of colour with the toadstools and it was also a good chance to try out my new maple/marijuna leaf cutters. I will need them in a few weeks so thought I'd give them a try out. Though they are maple leaves, I think they will pass for wacky backy to us uninitiated.

Amrat's 80th

This week has been the week from hell. Not only was I flat on my back most of the time after straining my back, but I also entered the date for a cake wrong and had to do a 24 hour turnaround for a 2-tiered cake. This cake wasn't it. I loved the detail on this cake and really enjoyed making it. The man turned out exactly how I wanted and things just came together right. Happy birthday Amrat.

Jett's Lego Ninja

Oh wow! How cute is this one. Loved making it and loved even more the end result. This little Lego man was so much fun to make. I hope I have more like him to do. Let's hope Jett enjoys this as much as I did.

Cooper's All Blacks Jersey (White Strip)

As I said previously, I had a bad week this week. Thank you to my daughter who managed to make all my cakes with me lying on the sofa yelling out directions and to my wonderful husband who got a crash course on rolling out large sheets of fondant and placing them on cakes. This cake didn't go to plan either. The customer (lovely lady) arrived - according to me - a day early (curse you Easter holidays). She wanted the cake for Good Friday but I am so used to cakes being picked up on Saturdays, I didn't register this. Thank goodness I had all the decorations ready to go and it was must a matter of placing them on the cake. The cake wasn't finished to how I wanted it, but Naomi was pleased all the same.

Larissa's Fairy, Butterfly and Flowers

This is the cake that put me in a spin. I had it marked down for May instead of April and if Karen hadn't rung me on Thursday night enquiring how it was all going, I would have experienced my worst nightmare and would have had a customer arriving at my door with no cake ready for them. Thankfully she did ring and I managed to put together this cake with a 24-hour turnaround. Not something I would want to do every day. As you can see, I was in such a rush that I forgot to remove the pins holding the fairies to the cake when I took the photo. I did remove them before I sent the cake away though.
